WATERFRONT HOMES | MUDEFORD, DORSET

Two superhomes showcasing modern design.

Brix is a development of two waterfront superhomes in Mudeford, Dorset, showcasing modern architectural design. The project is particularly special in that its setting required us to consider aspects of flooding, weathering and daylighting without compromising its function or appearance. Incorporating a natural stone into the material palette helps to set the building within its site, balancing well with the composition of strong vertical and horizontal architectural elements.

The dramatic entrance walkway is created by a broken wall which forms a colonnade and leads towards the dramatic double-height entrance atrium. Planters in this atrium emphasise the scale of this space and provide a connection between the interior and the exterior landscapes, an essential characteristic woven into the project throughout the design process.

The main living space is open-plan with significant glazing facing out towards the water and a large raised patio, where outdoor living is encouraged through the addition of a hot tub and outdoor dining space. At the first-floor level, four bedroom suites with access to a large terrace further enhances the indoor-outdoor connection.

A gallery space on the landing overlooks the atrium, offering a tranquil reading spot while connecting the two floors through this strong visual feature. Where the single-storey garage projects away from the main house, it has a green roof to visually minimise its impact on the views from the house. The master suite, located on the top floor, boasts twin dressing rooms, as well as an ensuite with feature bath and panoramic views of Mudeford Harbour.
