KURO | BRANKSOME PARK, DORSET

Thoughtfully curated material palette which sits well within the woodland surroundings.

Kuro uses a thoughtfully curated material palette which sits well within the woodland surroundings. The exterior showcases a combination of timber cladding and bronze effect detailing. The timber is treated using a Japanese technique where the planks are charred, resulting in a dark silver-black finish with a highly tactile quality. This not only enhances the visual appeal, but also ensures the timber’s resistance to weathering, eliminating the need for artificial finishing.

Spatially, Kuro has been designed around a central double height atrium, serving as a focal point from which the plan extends in three directions. This layout captures views across the entire site, creating a connection with the garden. The use of narrow floor plates enhances the interior with an abundance of natural light, creating an open atmosphere within the home. The ground floor is dedicated to entertaining, featuring a spacious and well-proportioned 15 meter open-plan kitchen, dining and living room. Within this space is a double-sided fireplace which adds both a visual focal point, and a functional warmth.
